Plate, from the Industrial Arts Dessert Service (Assiette Platte, Service des Arts Industriels) Plate

This is a plate. It was manufactured by Sèvres Porcelain Manufactory and painted by Jean Charles Develly. It is dated ca. 1821–1827 and we acquired it in 1989. Its medium is hard paste porcelain, vitreous enamel, gold. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

The Service des Arts Industriels (Arts and Industries Service) was one of the most beautifully decorated and politically motivated porcelain services produced at the Sevres Factory in the nineteenth century., Made during the years between 1820 and 1835, each piece from the set was ornamented with a different scene showcasing French artistic and industrial production. The center of this plate features a scene from a brewery, with barrels being washed at the right. Scenes of porcelain production, jewelry making, wallpaper printing, and tapestry weaving are featured on some of the other pieces from the service. The set was a royal gift of state from Louis Philippe of France to Prince Metternich of Austria in 1836. (A Royal Gift, 1994-95)
