Textile, Time Capsule
This is a Textile. It is dated designed 1954, reprinted 1988 and we acquired it in 1989. Its medium is cotton and its technique is screen printed on plain weave. It is a part of the Textiles department.
Many 1950s textile designs reflected a widespread optimism about the transformative power of science. Prints based on scientific and mathematical formulas and symbols, like Time Capsule, with its dense clusters of polyhedrons reminiscent of architect and engineer R. Buckminster Fuller’s geodesic domes (see facsimile of U.S. patent for Geodesic Dome construction in “Architecture of Life” section), were a reaction against the flowers and fruits that were so dominant in the immediate post-World War II period.
