Bengali Bowl
This is a bowl. It is dated ca. 1988 and we acquired it in 1988. Its medium is patinated bronze. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.
William Underhill’s bowls reflect the influence of his teacher, the potter Peter Voulkos, whose Abstract-Expressionist approach to sculpting encouraged formal experimentation. Underhill was also guided by the functionalist aesthetic of modernism and the geometry of the International Style, particularly in his quest for pure form. The artist describes the symmetry of a vessel as being an analog for one’s individual experience of being centered, physically and spiritually, in the world.
