Sampler (Germany)
This is a Sampler. It is dated 19th century and we acquired it in 1981. Its medium is silk and cotton embroidery on linen foundation and its technique is embroidered in cross, long-armed cross, and overcasting stitches on plain weave foundation. It is a part of the Textiles department.
A loomed width of cotton block patterned 3&1 twill damask, the wefts of which were removed in two sections: first for a narrow band of needlework, second for long warp fringe interworked. The remaining warps were braided and left hanging for fringe.
