Pair of Three-Arm Candelabra Candelabra, 1739

This is a candelabra. It was made by Claude Ballin II. It is dated 1739 and we acquired it in 1950. Its medium is silver, gold. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

The restrained designs of Claude Ballin II, a goldsmith to Louis XV, were popular with Parisian and foreign clients, including Empress Anna of Russia and Saxon prime minister Heinrich, Count von Brühl (1700–1763). The swirling stem and branches show the influence of Meissonnier; the base is less rococo. This model may have been ordered by the Spanish court, as copies by the Spanish court silversmith exist.

This object was donated by Unknown. It is credited Gift of Anonymous Donor.
