Drawing, Design for the West Wall of the Music Room, for Brighton Pavilion, Brighton, England
This is a Drawing. It was created by Frederick Crace. It is dated ca. 1817 and we acquired it in 1948. Its medium is brush and watercolor, gouache over traces of graphite on white wove paper . It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.
Crace designed fantastical interiors for the Brighton Pavilion. In this presentation drawing for the music room, Crace’s paintings of pseudo-Chinese landscapes imitate the decoration on imported Chinese red-lacquer boxes. The drawing presents two variations (one is under the overleaf drawing) of the painted-glass windows, backlit to produce an opalescent glow.
It is credited Museum purchase through gift of Mrs. John Innes Kane.
Its dimensions are
33.6 x 51.1 cm (13 1/4 x 20 1/8 in.) Mat: 55.9 x 71.1 cm (22 x 28 in.)
