Print, Under the Falls, Catskill Mountains

This is a Print. It was after Winslow Homer and published by Harper's Weekly and Harper & Bros.. It is dated September 14, 1872 and we acquired it in 1947. Its medium is wood engraving in black ink on paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.

Starting in summer 1871, Winslow Homer made several excursions to the Catskills region, especially around Hurley, New York, searching for landscapes and subject matter for paintings and magazine illustrations. One picture (now lost) inspired this wood engraving showing Kaaterskill Falls, which Cole and Church had depicted as wild wilderness, but by Homer’s time had become a popular tourist destination for fashionable men and women. The wood engraving The Fishing Party (on opposite wall) represents the kinds of activities enjoyed by tourists in the tri-state region of Pennsylvania, New York, and New Jersey. This image includes two women fly-fishing, which was considered appropriate for refined women only after the Civil War. The figures reclining on the bank were studied in a graphite sketch in preparation for the print.
