Sidewall, Oranges and Lemons Say the Bells of St. Clements
This is a sidewall. It was designed by Dorothy Hilton and made by Jeffrey & Company. It is dated 1902 and we acquired it in 1946. Its medium is machine printed on paper. It is a part of the Wallcoverings department.
"Oranges and Lemons" is a well-known English nursery rhyme. Of unknown origin, it is possible that the children of London made up the words to fit the rhythm of the ringing church bells. This delightful wallpaper shows a group of children encircled around a pair of these fruit trees, their costumes each composed of a different pattern which is set against the pattern created by the daisies in the grass.
