Print, Jupiter, from Grotesques à fond noir, Divinités et Allégories (Grotesques on Black Ground, Divinities and Allegories)
This is a Print. It is dated ca. 1575 and we acquired it in 1945. Its medium is engraving on off-white laid paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.
Finely feathered ears grow from the heads of monks, and breasts sprout from the bodies of birds. Famous in Strasbourg for his delicate and dexterous goldsmith designs, Delaune articulated meticulous details with a sharp wit and a skillful hand in this series of prints for decorative metalwork. His whimsical creatures are accentuated by a black ground, a style that he may have derived from his earlier German counterparts such as Heinrich Aldegrever.
It is credited Museum purchase through gift of Mrs. John I. Kane.
