Print, Sense of Sound, plate from Quinque sensum typi in usum aurifabroru exarati (Images of the Five Senses Engraved for the Benefit of the Goldsmith)
This is a Print. It is dated ca. 1580 and we acquired it in 1945. Its medium is blackwork, engraving on laid paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.
With their bold, graphic frames, these prints were inspired by Heinrich Renbage—a Cologne engraver famous for his blackwork designs. De Passe created these designs after, fleeing religious persecution in his native Antwerp. Stylized birds and swirling garlands offset more naturalistic scenes depicting the senses, demonstrating his range of techniques.
It is credited Museum purchase through gift of Mrs. John I. Kane.
