Print, Plate 24, from Grotteßco: in diverßche manieren (Various Grotesques)

This is a Print. It was designed by Jan Vredeman de Vries and etched by Johannes van Doetechum the Elder and Lucas van Doetechum and published by Gerard de Jode. It is dated 1564 and we acquired it in 1945. Its medium is etching on laid paper.. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.

De Vries was best known for his model books for architects, and his grotesque designs reflect a curious combination of perspectival invention and flat ornament. Cornices and pediments project from a field of playful, delicate grotesques, creating an unsettling illustionistic space. With their spindly, ethereal architectural elements, de Vries’s designs recall the ancient murals that inspired the genre, but the play between dimensions is distinctive.

It is credited Museum purchase through gift of Mrs. John Innes Kane.
