Print, Ornament with Mask and Grotesque Figures
This is a Print. It was designed by Heinrich Aldegrever. It is dated 1550 and we acquired it in 1945. Its medium is engraving on laid paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.
Aldegrever was a prolific engraver, and a small series of grotesque designs is among his last works. Unlike many of his peers who employed motifs of delicate scrollwork to unify their decorative designs, Aldegrever’s ornament features hefty hybrid figures balanced compactly into a small frame around a central mask and a set of trophies.
It is credited Museum purchase through gift of Mrs. John Innes Kane.
