Sidewall (France)

This is a sidewall. It is dated 1920–25 and we acquired it in 1945. Its medium is block printed on paper. It is a part of the Wallcoverings department.

A very bold art deco wallpaper featuring stylized renderings of sea forms including red seaweed or coral, starfish, and possibly jellyfish. The bold curvilinear form in the design’s center creates a sense of movement and would form an irregular stripe pattern on the wall. The design is highlighted with metallic silver, giving the pattern some depth.

This object was donated by Nancy McClelland. It is credited Gift of Nancy McClelland.

Its dimensions are

74 x 49.5 cm (29 1/8 x 19 1/2 in.)

It is inscribed

Printed in selvedge: "Made in France, Nancy McClelland".
