Drawing, Gateway, Possibly a Stage Design

This is a Drawing. It was created by Giorgio Fuentes. We acquired it in 1938. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.

This arch may have never existed in three dimensions, as Fuentes was a stage designer who worked at La Scala in Milan, in Paris, and in Frankfurt. He had studied with one of the most prominent Milanese stage designers, Pietro Gonzaga. Goethe admired Fuentes’ neo-classical compositions and tried to persuade the artist to work for the theater in Weimer.

It is credited Museum purchase through gift of various donors and from Eleanor G. Hewitt Fund.
