Drawing, Plate Illustrating Fanmaking from Diderot's "Encyclopédie"
This is a Drawing. It was manufactured by Denis Diderot. It is dated ca. 1751–1766 and we acquired it in 1980. Its medium is engraving on paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.
The first plate of the Diderot series describing fan making shows the preparation of the paper leaves: two sheets are glued together to form a mount which is then stretched onto a fan-shaped form, allowed to dry, and trimmed to desired shape.
It is credited Gift of Unknown Donor.
