Burlwood Matchsafe
This is a Matchsafe. It is dated ca. 1910 and we acquired it in 1978. Its medium is burlwood, gold, enamel, diamonds. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.
This object was
donated by
Carol B. Brener and Stephen W. Brener.
It is credited Gift of Stephen W. Brener and Carol B. Brener.
Its dimensions are
5 x 4 x 1.4 cm (1 15/16 x 1 9/16 x 9/16 in. )
It has the following markings
Possible maker's mark impressed in diamond shape, only partially legible. Additional, possibly maker's name, appears to be "JANESICH" (however, the "J" is blurred and may in fact be another letter). Third stamp is an eagle's head for France (possibly Paris). All marks stamped on intereior bezel of lid. With regard to possible maker's marks, the blue Brenner books in AAID notes the following: "Marked, 'Halsi-.' Maker: M. JANESICH." I do not see Halsi nor the letter M. anywhere on the box.
