Print, Exterior of the Duke's Theater, Dorset Gardens, London, After a 17th Century Book Illustration
This is a Print. It was designed by Richard Sawyer. It is dated 1809 and we acquired it in 1977. Its medium is etching with engraving, hand colored. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.
The inscription on the print is in error regarding the location of this theater. The Duke's Company used a theater in Lincoln's Inn Fields from 1661–1771, then transferred to the theater shown, in Dorset Gardens. Here The Empress of Morocco, by Elkannah Settle, was presented in 1673. Settle's play was the first published with illustrations showing the exterior and interior of a theater, and scenes from a play, illustrations from which these prints are drawn.
It is credited Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Richard B. Freund.
