Wine Glass and Bottle Cooler (Verrière et Seau à Liqueur; One of a Pair) Monteith And Bottle Cooler
This is a monteith and bottle cooler. It was manufactured by Sèvres Porcelain Manufactory and painted by Noël Guillaume. It is dated 1772 and we acquired it in 1977. Its medium is soft paste porcelain, vitreous enamel, gold. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.
This type of basin or monteith was used for rinsing or cooling wine glasses during a meal. At this time, only one glass was used during the service of many wines. The form eventually disappeared when glass became more widely available and was kept on the table. Eventually, each type of wine had its own glass. (Tools for the Table, 1993).
It is credited Museum purchase from Charles E. Sampson Memorial Fund.
