Vase (China)

This is a vase. It was made by Unknown. It is dated late 17th century and we acquired it in 1976. Its medium is porcelain. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

In the second half of the seventeenth century in China, during the Kangxi period, craftsmen mastered the technique of combining cobalt blue and copper red underglaze. This vase, dated from the Kangxi period, provides a fine example of the technique in its strong contrast of blue ground and coral-red carp. The carp, symbols of perseverance, portray the ancient story of fish winning dragonhood by surmounting the rapids of the Yellow River.

This object was featured in our Object of the Week series in a post titled A Tale of Fish and Dragons.

This object was donated by Stanley Siegel and Mrs. Celia Siegel. It is credited Gift from the Collection of Stanley Siegel.
