Valance (India)

This is a Valance. It is dated 18th century and we acquired it in 1973. Its medium is cotton and its technique is mordant painted and dyed and resist dyed (chintz) on plain weave. It is a part of the Textiles department.

The elegant refinement and lively character of this hand-painted and dyed botanical chintz belie the many hours of craftsmanship necessary to create an image of such complexity in workshops unchanged since antiquity.

This object was donated by Josephine Howell. It is credited Gift of Josephine Howell.
