Border (Italy), late 16th century

This is a Border. It is dated late 16th century and we acquired it in 1971. Its medium is linen and its technique is bobbin lace, discontinuous tape. It is a part of the Textiles department.

The steps in making 1971-50-361:
1. Starting at the top, elements began at the tip of each shape. They were interworked to complere a shape, carried into another shape and ended, or formed in tape-like curves into which the elements of other shapes were secured. At the bottom, the tape-like shapes were neatly finished off.
2. Secondary blossoms made in the same way, beginning at the pointed or rounded tips.
3. Band finished off at the bottom by a narrow, bobbin-made tape.

This object was bequest of Marian Hague. It is credited Bequest of Marian Hague.
