Border (possibly Italy)

This is a Border. It is dated 16th century and we acquired it in 1971. Its medium is linen, metallic thread and its technique is needle lace, interlacing. It is a part of the Textiles department.

The looped and interlaced over one, under one structure was made with a single yarn threaded through a needle. By completing one section and adding others it would have been possible to make a lace of any length. This is a tedious and time consuming technique and not as adaptable to fine laces as looping and braiding, the two techniques which are the basis of the laces featured in this exhibition.

This object was bequest of Marian Hague. It is credited Bequest of Marian Hague.
