Cap Streamer (France)
This is a Cap streamer. It is dated 1690s and we acquired it in 1971. Its medium is linen and its technique is mid to late 17th century needle lace, commonly called rosaline. It is a part of the Textiles department.
In the second half of the 17th century women wore caps with high frontspieces of lace decorated with diamonds and ribbons. A pair of streamers, called "barbes" in French and "lappets" in English, hung from the back of these caps. A woman's rank is said to have determined their length.
