Armchair (USA)
This is a armchair. It was designed by Jack Lenor Larsen and Edward J. Wormley and manufactured by Dunbar Furniture Co.. It is dated 1959 and we acquired it in 1971. Its medium is laminated walnut, caning, woven wool upholstery. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.
Caning in furniture is a method of weaving peeled rattan vine to form chair seats or backs. The technique first became popular in Europe in the mid-seventeenth century and has enjoyed continued use to the present. Wormley often employed caning in his chair backs in the 1940s and 50s; in this chair the caning allows one to see the Y-shaped back support from the front.
