Caduceus-form Hair Ornament
This is a Hair ornament. It was made by Fortunato Pio Castellani & Sons. It is dated ca. 1875 and we acquired it in 1969. Its medium is cast and granulated gold, carved ivory. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.
Taking the form of the caduceus, or wand, of the god Mercury, this hairpin incorporates dragon heads similar to those found on Crypriot gold earrings from the fifth century B.C. (Jewelry 1989-90)
It is credited Museum purchase through gift of Anonymous Donor, Annie Schermerhorn Kane, and various donors.
