Lovers in a Boat Brooch
This is a Brooch. It was made by Carlo Giuliano. It is dated ca. 1880 and we acquired it in 1969. Its medium is gold, enamel, diamonds, sapphires, emeralds, rubies, pearls. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.
Giuliano is best known for enameled jewelry in the Renaissance tradition. His “Lovers in a Boat” brooch exemplifies this style while also showing Art Nouveau flourish. In the form of a lavish boat with two enamel-painted lovers in the stern and two doves in the prow, the brooch is also decorated with numerous gemstones and bright enamel, making for a highly decorative love token.
It is credited Museum purchase through gift of Anonymous Donor, Annie Schermerhorn Kane, and various donors.
