Print, Vase (Plate 6 of a Series)
This is a Print. It was designed by Enea Vico. It is dated 17th century and we acquired it in 1963. Its medium is black ink on paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.
While the initial interest in the grotesque was sparked by ancient wall murals, ancient sculpture served as a similar source of inspiration. Vico published a series of prints of vases, each inscribed in Latin with the words "At Rome, obtained from the antique." Although Vico’s precise sources are unknown, it is likely that he took artistic liberties in his documentation, as many of the original ancient works might have been damaged. This and other similar series by Italian printmakers circulated widely, and became the inspiration for designers throughout Europe.
It is credited Museum purchase through gift of E.F. Caldwell & Co..
