Waistcoat (France)

This is a Waistcoat. It is dated 1780–95 and we acquired it in 1962. Its medium is silk and its technique is chain stitch embroidery made with a tambour hook in twenty-four colors of silk, on silk plain weave. It is a part of the Textiles department.

When the waistcoat was new the figures in the boat had paper faces pasted onto the fabric.

This object was bequest of Richard Cranch Greenleaf (American, 1887–1961). It is credited Bequest of Richard Cranch Greenleaf in memory of his mother, Adeline Emma Greenleaf.
