Panel (Portugal)

This is a Panel. It is dated ca. 1600 and we acquired it in 1962. Its medium is linen and its technique is grid of withdrawn element work with needle lace, reticella style. It is a part of the Textiles department.

The grid format of the lace was created by removing most of the threads from a fabric substrate. A series of embroidery stitches was built up over the remaining framework to create the design. The resulting look is delicate, almost like a line drawing. The scenes are of Judith and Holofernes, attacker of her people, and displaying his head on the city walls.

It is credited Bequest of Richard Cranch Greenleaf in memory of his mother, Adeline Emma Greenleaf.

Its dimensions are

H x W (a): 17.8 x 44.1 cm (7 x 17 3/8 in.)
