Vase (Austria)

This is a vase. It was produced by Wiener Werkstätte. It is dated 1923 and we acquired it in 1962. Its medium is chased, raised, cast, and applied silver. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

Today, the Wiener Werkstatte is most often associated with the rectilinear, inlaid, functional, and rational objects created by its co-founders Koloman Moser and Josef Hoffmann around the turn of the century. However, during and after World War I, a group of designers, led by Dagobert Peche, helped to redefine its style to embrace curving forms, ornament, and playfulness. Peche, appointed manager of the Werkstatte's artists' workshops in 1915, supplied designs for all areas and all media of Werkstatte production, designing around three thousand objects in total. This vase, likely the last piece (1923) Peche designed before his premature death at age thirty-six, represents the Werkstatte’s decorative post–WWI style. Peche's influences were varied: as a mentor he claimed Hoffmann (who was in turn influenced by his student), but was also inspired by Baroque and Rococo designs, ancient Greece (particularly the cult of Apollo and Dionysus, as shown by his recurring grapevine motif), folk art, and had a strong interest in painting. Peche, who was greatly admired in his time but is not well known today, was described by Hoffmann as “Austria’s greatest genius in ornamentation since the days of the Baroque.”

Silvered bronze chandelier from the Wiener Werkstatte. The finial that touches the ceiling is a multi-petaled leaf. A long thin silverplated pole leads down to the lightbulb section. The pole has a spiral vine with leaves that meander down the pole. All of the six globe-shaped bulbs are set into a many-leafed receptacle where the bulbs are screwed in. The leaves below the bulbs are slanted upward and look as though they were cut with a tin shears. Below the leaves, the stem loops and there are six-budded flowers, which haven’t opened yet. Below that are more leaves. There are spirals and loops above some of the bulbs.

Small, square Wiener Werkstatte pin of mother-of-pearl, trimmed with ropelike twisted gold wire. Attached to the mother-of-pearl is a highly stylized gold sculpture of a tree, from which grapes, leaves, and flowers bloom. Two of the leaves are disproportionately large while the trunk is disproportionately short. The tree sits in what appears to be an inverted crown that is on a slant.

The topmost part of this two-piece sterling, ivory and ebony candle set is scalloped and open and faces up, like a flower. On each candle cup is a monogram. Scalloped silver is then repeated but this time is facing downward and inward. Carved silver elements are above and below a vertically incised short length of ebony. Like its relative, the matching compote, this includes a small silver design with feathery curves and striated silver points that look something like a rather small loving cup. A wide piece of vertically carved ivory, one of which is quite cracked and yellowed, is above a silver element that has more feathery curves surrounding what looks like a squat pumpkin. This piece ends in silver components: more scalloping and scored balls with two little people or animals one on either side of each ball. Each candlestick sits on a wide, thin and flat round of silver.
