Book

This is a Book. It was designed by Cosimo Morelli. It is dated 1780 and we acquired it in 1962. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.

Although very small—38 feet from stage to central boxes, 42 feet wide and 42 feet high—Morelli's theater at Imola was extremely innovative. Its dimensions were made to appear greater by extending the ceiling of the half-oval-shaped auditorium over part of the stage, completing the oval. The central stage opening alone could be open with the side spaces closed; the side stages could show different scenes; or the caryatids (apparently not real supports) could be removed to provide an even wider playing space.

It is credited Museum purchase through gift of Mrs. William G. Fitch.
