Print, Design for Wall Brackets, Plate 42 in One Hundred and Fifty New Designs
This is a Print. It was designed by Thomas Johnson and engraved by Butler Clowes. It is dated 1756–57 and we acquired it in 1962. Its medium is etching, engraving on cream laid paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.
Published in monthly installments from 1756 to 1758,Thomas Johnson’s designs were an influential source not only for carvers in London but also in the American colonies. His work incorporated elements of designs by Continental European designers such as Jean-François Cuvilliés, otherwise unknown in the colonies.
It is credited Museum purchase through gift of Agnes Miles Carpenter.
