Two Plates, from a Napoleon III Table Service (Assiettes, Service à Chiffre Doré de l'Empereur Napoléon III) Plates

This is a plates. It was manufactured by Sèvres Porcelain Manufactory. It is dated 1846–1868 and we acquired it in 1961. Its medium is hard paste porcelain, vitreous enamel, gold. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

It is credited Museum purchase through gift of Emily Howland Chauncey.

Its dimensions are

H x diam. (a: plate): 2.8 × 24.5 cm (1 1/8 × 9 5/8 in.) H x diam. (b: plate): 2.8 × 24.5 cm (1 1/8 × 9 5/8 in.)

It has the following markings

Underside of plate a: [1] "S.46." within pill-shaped mark, printed in green (glazed and fired in 1846) [2] "DORÉ À SÈVRES" surrounding crowned "N" with "68" beneath, printed in red (gilt decoration added in 1868) [3] crowned "CHÂTEAU / DE / ST. CLOUD" within round mark with jagged edge, printed in brown Underside of plate b: [1] "S.46" within pill-shaped mark, printed in green (glazed and fired in 1846) [2] "DORÉ À SÈVRES" surrounding crowned "N" and "68", printed in red (gilt decoration added in 1868) [3] crowned "CHÂTEAU / DE / ST. CLOUD" within round mark with jagged edge, printed in brown

It is inscribed

Front of plates: [1] central crowned "N" entwined with interlaced L's in foliate scrollwork, printed in gold (the "N" for Napoleon)
