Centerpiece with the Four Continents Centerpiece

This is a centerpiece. It was designed by Félix-Jacques Duban and made by Jean-Baptiste-Claude Odiot and Charles Nicolas Odiot. It is dated ca. 1840 and we acquired it in 1960. Its medium is silver. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

This object was donated by Estate of James Hazen Hyde. It is credited Gift of the Estate of James Hazen Hyde.

Its dimensions are

H x diam.: 27 × 33 cm (10 5/8 in. × 13 in.)

It has the following markings

On the underside of the centerpiece: [1] “O” above a lamp within a lozenge, impressed (maker’s mark)* [2] “ODIOT. ÁPARIS.”, impressed (maker’s mark) [3] Possibly an insect, impressed (possibly a bigorne mark) On the edge of base: [1] Minerva head, impressed (standard mark, French, 1838–)
