Print, Stage Design: Garden Scene with a Fountain, Part V, Plate 8, "Architettura e Prospettive," Augsburg
This is a Print. It was designed by Giuseppe Galli Bibiena and engraved by Johann Andréas Pfeffel. It is dated 1740–44 and we acquired it in 1957. Its medium is etching with engraving in black ink on white paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.
Opinions differe, but the scene is either Act III of Sirita, an opera by Antonio Caldara, given in Vienna August 28, 1719, or a scene for Ipermestra, by Pietro Metastasio, given at the Hoftheater, Vienna, January 8, 1744.
It is credited Museum purchase through gift of the Estate of David Wolfe Bishop.
Its dimensions are
Platemark: 34.1 × 51.1 cm (13 7/16 × 20 1/8 in.) H x W: 37.5 × 53.2 cm (14 3/4 × 20 15/16 in.)
It is inscribed
Inscribed lower left: "Joseph Galli Bibiena Sac. Coes. M. Archit. Theatr. Primarius Inv. et del."; lower right: "J. A. Pfeffel S. C. M. Chalcogr. sculpt. direx. A.V." Below the number "8", above, right: "P.V."
