Print, Plate 17, from Neüw Grotteßken Buch (New Grotesque Book)

This is a Print. It was designed by Christoph Jamnitzer. It is dated 1610 and we acquired it in 1957. Its medium is engraving on laid paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.

When Jamnitzer published the Neüw Grotteßken Buch in 1610, he already had a long established reputation as a master goldsmith, but the series quickly became his best-known work. The group of sixty etchings blends artistic invention with humor and irony. Many of Jamnizter’s designs can be read as satire of contemporary culture, while others are simply indulgent exercises of a new style of grotesque ornament. Bizarre and monstrous creatures abound. In one print the head of a bull appears paired with the body of a snail and alligator hewads for feet. In another, a rat and a monkey battle each other with swords and shields while mounted on fantastic beasts. As Jamnitzer wrote in one of several title pages for the series, the Neüw Grotteßken Buch is "full of brand new odd stuff, useful for everybody."

It is credited Museum purchase through gift of the Estate of David Wolfe Bishop.
