Bracelet (Italy)
This is a Bracelet. It is dated ca. 1850 and we acquired it in 1955. Its medium is carved and polished limestone, gold sheet and wire. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.
The carved cameo-like medallions set into this bracelet are said to be made from the lava of Mount Vesuvius, which buried the town of Pompeii and Herculaneum when it erupted in A.D. 79. Lava jewelry of this kind was sought by nineteenth-century tourists who journeyed to these sites to see the ruins. Famous Italian poets and anciet heros and gods were often the subject of lava carvings. Dante, Petrarch and Tasso are among the portraits represented in this bracelet. (Jewelry 1989-90)
