Fruit Plate

This is a Fruit plate. It was manufactured by Chelsea Porcelain Manufactory. It is dated 1753–1758 and we acquired it in 1955. Its medium is molded porcelain, overglaze decoration. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

This object was donated by Irwin Untermyer, Esq.. It is credited Gift of Irwin Untermyer.

Round white porcelain plate with wavy brown-edged rim, painted with plants and insects. At upper left, a pear-shaped green and purple papaya fruit on a short stem. Behind the fruit, sprays of purple-flowering millet grass with long green leaves and stems. At lower right, two serrated yellow-green leaves. Surrounding the plants, smaller insects and plants. At three o'clock, a brown and blue butterfly, appearing in flight; at six o'clock, a purple and yellow winged insect and small blue flowers; at nine o'clock, a purple and pale yellow winged insect; at eleven o'clock, a round purple beetle.
