Bed Hanging (Italy)

This is a Bed hanging. It is dated 18th century and we acquired it in 1952. Its medium is linen and its technique is withdrawn element with darned motifs; bobbin lace. It is a part of the Textiles department.

The Augsburg printer, Johann Schonsperger the Younger, printed textiles as well as books and owned a paper mill. Apparently he was the first printer to cut patterns for embroidery and weaving on wood blocks in order to increase circulation and simplify multiplication.

His first pattern book was printed about 1523 and was followed by two others in several editions. In this earliest edition of his first book, sixteen leaves of the twenty four have patterns printed on the left half of the page only. On the other half he printed an area of ruled lines on which patterns could be redrawn or used for new ones...

Schonsperger's patterns were copied in the first Italian pattern books.

Its dimensions are

H x W: 269 x 92 cm (8 ft. 9 7/8 in. x 36 1/4 in.)
