Print, Lafayette Theater, New York

This is a Print. It was designed by James Eddy and after Peter Grain. It is dated 1827 and we acquired it in 1952. Its medium is engraving with etching in black ink on paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.

The Lafayette Theater was opened in 1825 as an amphitheater for circuses and equestrian dramas, then was renovated and reopened as a theater in 1827. The print records its appearance in tis second guise, "the largest and most splendid theater in the Union."

It is credited Museum purchase through gift of and in memory of Robert W. Chanler.
