Box And Cover
This is a box and cover. It is dated 19th century and we acquired it in 1951. Its medium is bent and burned wood. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.
Pantry boxes were a popular household tool to store foodstuffs in the kitchen such as dried beans. The boxes were made by hand in the early nineteenth century before they were mass produced in woodenware factories from the 1870s. Delicate branded intaglio decoration lends this example a lively pattern.
