Censer (Italy)
This is a Censer. It is dated probably 18th century and we acquired it in 1951. Its medium is bronze. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.
The burning of incense is an integral feature of many religious ceremonies. Censers, used in Christian ritual since medieval times, are perforated vessels that are swung on long chains to spread the fragrant smoke of incense. (Design for Life, 1997-98).
