Chalice Cover (half) (Italy)

This is a Chalice cover (half). It is dated early 17th century and we acquired it in 1951. Its medium is linen and its technique is needle lace, early 17th c. needle lace, and style. It is a part of the Textiles department.

The eagle and dragon, symbols of the Borghese family, may indicate that this chalice cover was made for Camillo Borghese (1550-1620) who was elected Pope Paul V in 1605. He was devoted to the interests of his family, began a collection of antiquities, and enlarged the Vatican.

It is credited Museum purchase from Au Panier Fleuri Fund.

Its dimensions are

H x W x D: 27.9 x 28 x 58.6 cm (11 x 11 x 23 1/16 in.)
