Tray Tray

This is a tray. It was manufactured by Edward Barton, British, active London, England, 1821- ca. 1838. It is dated 1823 and we acquired it in 1950. Its medium is silver. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

This object was donated by Mrs. J. Insley Blair. It is credited Gift of Mrs. J. Insely Blair.

Its dimensions are

It has the following markings

On front within ornamental border, near foot of female figure at bottom left: [1] "EB" in a rectangle, impressed (maker's mark Edward Barton) [2] "h" in rectangular reserve with canted corners, impressed (London date letter mark 1823) [3] lion passant, impressed (British standard mark) [4] king's head, impressed (sovereign head duty mark) On reverse, at top, near flange: [1] "EB" in a rectangle, impressed (maker's mark Edward Barton) [2] "h" in rectangular reserve with canted corners, impressed (London date letter mark 1823) [3] uncrowned leopard, impressed (London town mark) [4] lion passant, impressed (British standard mark) [5] king's head, impressed (sovereign head duty mark)

It is inscribed

On reverse of tray, at center: "This Salver was bought March 1824/BY MAJR GENL FULLER,/with a portion of the prize money/awarded to his late lamented Brother,/COL. WM FULLER OF THE 1ST DRAGN GDS/in commemoration of his having fallen/gloriously at the head of his Regiment/whilst leading it on to Victory, at the/MEMORABLE BATTLE OF WATERLOO/on the 18th of June 1815.", engraved. On reverse of tray, around edge: “Presented to Natalie Bennett Knowlton on her marriage to John Insley Blair January the sixth 1912, by Clinton Ledyard Blair and Florence Jennings Blair”, in cursive, engraved.
