Print, Grotesque Panel with Dolphins
This is a Print. It was print maker: Lucas van Leyden. It is dated 1527 and we acquired it in 1949. Its medium is engraving on laid paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.
One of the most influential printmakers of his generation, van Leyden created several engravings inspired by the grotesque designs that were being produced and replicated in Italy. Here, van Leyden crafted sinuous, symmetrical spirals that transform from slithering creatures into architectural elements and then botanical vines and leaves. Though he derived inspiration from his Italian counterparts, van Leyden’s grotesque is more refined and restrained.
