Print, Ewer with Handle
This is a Print. It was print maker: Cornelis Floris II and published by Hieronymus Cock. It is dated 1548 and we acquired it in 1946. Its medium is engraving on white laid paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.
These two prints are from a suite of designs for decorated ewers by Cornelius Floris II. Floris was no doubt inspired by Enea Vico’s series of vessel designs after antiquity, as well as Italian artist Rosso Fiorentino’s designs at Fontainbleau. But Floris’s own designs possess a playful approach to the classical notion of the grotesque. Floris and his contemporary, Cornelius Bos, pushed the grotesque beyond the purely ornamental and into the realm of bizarre drolleries.
It is credited Museum purchase through gift of Mrs. John Innes Kane.
