Drawing, Design for a Carriage
This is a Drawing. It is dated 1782–85 and we acquired it in 1931. Its medium is pen and brown-black ink; brush and watercolor on cream laid paper bound in vellum. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.
By using an overlay, the illustrator of Cardinal de Rohan’s "stable journal" was able to show this carriage with its specially fitted luggage: the flat case contoured to the roof of the carriage, the two trunks carried over the front and rear wheel axles, and the bags attached to the front pedestal.
