Artist Saverio della Gatta depicted many Italian landscapes and Neapolitan scenes of everyday life. In this watercolor, he shows a group of elite travelers journeying by sedan chair, which is supported by a caravan of horses. Through the glass windows, the fashionable couple enjoys the view of a smoking Mount Vesuvius, distant mountains, and architectural ruins.
