Drawing, Design for a Theater Curtain
This is a Drawing. It was designed by V. Bertolotti. It is dated mid-19th century and we acquired it in 1931. Its medium is pen and black, blue ink, brush and watercolor, gouache, gold paint, graphite on wove paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.
The central figure holding a dagger probably symbolizes Tragedy. The seated figure at the right holds a Roman theater mask; that at the left, a lyre. The grotesques are brought up-to-date by the addition of winged nineteenth-century ballerinas.
