Sidewall (USA)
This is a sidewall. It was after Walter Crane. It is dated 1875–1900 and we acquired it in 1931. Its medium is machine-printed, oil colors, textured ground. It is a part of the Wallcoverings department.
Like many of the Pre-Raphaelites he admired, Walter Crane favored mythological and fairytale subjects, including nursery rhymes, in his books and designs for children. This paper shows a pattern adapted from six of his narrative nursery rhyme scenes, including those from Jack and Jill and Little Bo-Peep. It is easy to imagine this wallcovering in a children’s room or nursery, where its charming images would have delighted those inside.
